Filipino Canadian community leaders, human rights advocates

to stage protest on Philippine President Duterte’s  State of the Nation Address

WHAT: People’s State of the Nation Address rally at Bathurst and Wilson Parkette to denounce the recent passing of the controversial “Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020” in the Philippines.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte will deliver his Fourth State of the Nation Address on 27 July 2020 to highlight his government’s yearly accomplishments. He recently signed into law the “Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020” that went into effect Saturday July 18.  The law deals serious blows on fundamental civil and political rights — from warrantless arrests and unlimited detention even with no charges, to state   wiretapping and mass surveillance. Persons exercising their democratic right to criticize government or its policies can be arrested. The government can file a criminal case against a Filipino or foreigner in a Philippine court. The broad and vague definition of terrorism in this Act puts activists in the Filipino  community including immigrants and migrant workers, and even Canadian sympathizers in the crosshairs of the Philippine government.

BAYAN-Canada is calling on all Filipinos living in Canada to stand in solidarity for freedom and democracy in the Philippines, to take a stand and resist tyranny. The July 26th PSONA is a cross-Canada day of action.

WHEN: SUNDAY, JULY 26TH, 2020. 4:30 – 7:00 PM

WHERE:  BATHURST & WILSON PARKETTE

3749 Bathurst Street, Toronto, Ontario. (Bathurst St. and Wilson Ave)
