MANILA—Several Catholic prelates lauded the pronouncement of President Rodrigo Duterte against same sex marriage in the country.

Bataan Bishop Ruperto Santos said he appreciated the statement of the Chief Executive, noting that it only shows that he still supports the Church’s teachings.

“It is very inspiring and encouraging news. We are grateful to our president and we are appreciative of his wise decision. This shows he still adheres to our catholic teachings, that is, stable marriage and marriage of a man and a woman, is strong pillar of stable and secured society,” he said.

“With his decision sanctity and stability of marriage is respected and promoted,” he added.

Sorsogon Bishop Arturo Bastes noted that the action of the President is considered “a pogi point.”

“It was a very pleasant surprise for me! Very nice of (President Duterte). It is a pogi point for our President!” he added.

Novaliches Emeritus Bishop Teodoro Bacani said he is delighted with President Duterte’s pronouncement.

“I’m happy with the President’s decision. Let us not follow the bad example of other countries in this matter,” added the retired prelate.

On Sunday, the President said that marriage in the country is between man and woman.

But, he noted that he is not against homosexuals.
