Magnitude 5.1 quake jolts Antique

MANILA — A magnitude-5.1 aftershock occurred on Tuesday jolting the province of Antique and expect more aftershocks from the tremor, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.

In an interview, Phivolcs Director Dr. Renato Solidum said the 5.1 quake shook Antique around 5:45 a.m. and its epicenter was traced some 34 kilometers southeast of Anini-y in Antique, which felt the tremor at Intensity 4.

Intensity 4 also was felt in San Jose; and Tobias Fornier, Antique; Iloilo City; Bago City and La Castellana, Negros Occidental.

Phivolcs described an Intensity 4 as moderately strong felt generally by people indoors and by some people outdoors. Light sleepers are awakened.

It further noted that a vibration like the “passing of heavy truck, hanging objects swing considerably. Dinner, plates, glasses, windows and doors rattle while floors and walls of wood framed buildings creak. Standing motor cars may rock slightly.

It added that liquids in containers are slightly disturbed. Water in containers oscillate strongly while rumbling sound may sometimes be heard.

The agency added that Intensity 3 was felt in Oton, Iloilo; La Carlota, Negros Occcidental; Jagna, Bohol, while Intensity 2 was felt in Ajuy, Iloilo; Culasi, Antique; Basay, Negros Occidental.

The tremor, which was tectonic in origin, had a shallow depth of 10 kilometers.

Solidum said after six minutes an aftershock of 4.2 jolted again the Anini-y in Antique around 5:51 a.m. with epicenter traced 21 kilometers southeast of Anini-y.

Intensity 3 felt at Anini-y and San Jose, Antique; and Iloilo City.

The tremor, which was tectonic in origin, had a shallow depth of 11 kilometers.

The Phivolcs recorded another aftershock with 3.1 quake jolting the province of Antique around 6:12 a.m. with epicenter traced 46 kilometers southeast of Anini-y, Solidum said.

”Medyo malakas yun una narecord na 5.1 kaya nagkaroon ng aftershock,” Solidum told the Philippines News Agency (PNA) in a phone interview.

The tremor, which was tectonic in origin, had a shallow depth of 65 kilometers.

However, despite the reported intensity and afterschocks, the agency noted that there was no casualty or damage reported from the quake.
