Victor Wood, PH’s ‘Jukebox King,’ passes away
Filipino singer Victor Wood, who is known as the Philippines’ “Jukebox King,” passed away on Friday, April 23.
His sister, Maria Testado, confirmed this on a Facebook post, saying, “Goodbye my ever dearest youngest brother, Victor Wood Jukebox King.”
“We love you so much. We will never forget you. Your memories will remain in our hearts and our minds forever. May your soul rest in peace with the Lord in heaven,” she added.
Meanwhile, Nerissa, Wood’s wife, told ABS-CBN News that he died due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) complications at the New Era General Hospital in Quezon City. Funeral arrangements have yet to be finalized.
Wood’s career bloomed in the 1970s, releasing hit songs such as “Mr. Lonely,” “I’m Sorry My Love,” “Eternally,” and “Carmelita,” among others.
Apart from being a singer, he also ventured into acting and tried to run for public office.
A film about his life, “The Victor Wood Story,” will also be released. On Facebook, the director of his biopic, Carlo Cuevas, extended his condolences to the family of the veteran singer.
“Mapalad ako dahil bago sya pinagpahinga ng Diyos ay narinig ko sa kanya mismo ang isang kwentong ngayon ay isa ng kasaysayan (I am fortunate that before God made him rest, I was able to hear from him his story which is now history),” he wrote.
“Isang karangalan na mapalapit sa kanya sa huling taon ng kanyang buhay. Ang mga karanasan nya ay nag iwan sa akin ng aral na babaunin ko hanggang sa pagtanda (It is an honor to be able to get close to him in the last year of his life. His experiences left me lessons that will stay with me until I grow old),” he added.
