As the country commemorates National Heroes’ day, President Rodrigo Duterte on Sunday honored and acknowledged the country’s national heroes and their contribution to nation building and independence.

In his National Heroes’ Day message, Duterte said that the best way to honor the country’s heroes—who he described as “men and women who helped lay the foundations of this nation”—is through upholding the rule of law and emulating their virtues.

“Today, we pay homage to the men and women who helped lay the foundations of this nation. Their courage, leadership and wisdom paved the way for us to enjoy the blessings of freedom, independence and democracy,” the president said.

He added that this country’s heroes dedicated their lives ensure that future generations will have a life that is full and comfortable.

He further added that this nation will harness the same virtues by continuing to fight against lawlessness, criminality and poverty which obstruct the country from achieving its full potential.

Duterte said that the nation will be forever grateful for their noble deeds and sacrifices.

“As we commemorate the life and works of our national heroes, we must continue to embrace their ways in our daily undertakings. Let us emulate their examples as we continue to realize our ideals and aspirations for ourselves and for our country,” he added.

Duterte lead the National Heroes Day rites at the Libingan ng mga Bayani at Fort Bonifacio on Monday, August 28.
