Mayor Sara condemns NPA attacks in Davao

DAVAO CITY–Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio has condemned the attacks perpetrated by the New People’s Army (NPA) here early Saturday morning, saying these were acts of terrorism.

“I take what happened today as a personal insult especially because the local government of Davao City has been supportive of the peace negotiations between the national government and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines, the political umbrella that covers the armed guerrilla movement. And because I have repeatedly offered to talk peace with the members of the NPA within Davao City,” said Mayor Sara in a press statement.

She also assured Davaoenos that police and security forces were on top of the situation. She ordered that the safety of civilians should be ensured and protected at all times.

“We shall pour all the available resources to achieve this end,” she said.

The mayor, who personally visited wounded victim, Larry Timbal Buenafe, fish vendor from Barangay 76-A, Agdao. Buenafe was passing along Mandug road to sell fish when an improvised explosive device went off. He sustained injuries in the head.

Early morning Saturday, the NPA attacked the Macondray Plastics Incorporated (MPI) in Barangay Tagpore, Panabo City around 3:30 a.m., burned the Lapanday box plant and plastic plant buildings along Tigatto road in Buhangin; and, Lorenzo Farm in Barangay Pangyan, Calinan

”We condemned these acts committed by a group that pretends to champion social justice and equality,” the mayor said.

The NPA is an organization unworthy of trust and respect, she stressed in her press statement.
