MANILA—Despite a massive crackdown on crime and corruption, a Duterte presidency will consistently and fully adhere to the rule of law.
This was the assurance given by the camp of PDP-LABAN presidential bet and Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte amid apprehension that the iron fist against criminals and grafters vowed by the former and his running mate Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano would lead to extrajudicial killings or summary executions.
“We wish to emphasize that a Duterte presidency will respect and uphold the Constitution, especially the rights and freedoms unequivocally guaranteed by its provisions,” PDP-LABAN spokesperson Atty. Paola Alvarez said.
For his part, Sen. Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III, PDP-LABAN president, said: “Mayor Duterte has stated time and again that we have many laws that are good but the problem lies in implementation or enforcement. He will simply implement or enforce existing laws to restore order and institute real reforms.”
He added that Duterte will lead an efficient government that really does its job and delivers services to the people in a timely manner.
This includes the swift dispensation of justice for everyone.
Pimentel said that Duterte will ensure that the judicial system is clean and honest, and that rich and poor are equal before the law.
“We need a strong leader, a leader with political will, someone who is not afraid to implement the law without fear or favor, no matter who gets hurt in the process. That leader is Mayor Duterte,” he added.
Alvarez said a Duterte administration will give law enforcement agencies a free hand in pursuing their mission of fighting crime and running after criminals with hammer and tongs, but they cannot use excessive force unless warranted by specific circumstances.
Also, Duterte’s camp assured that under no circumstance would extrajudicial killings or summary executions by law enforcers be tolerated.
“Our goal is to restore law and order in our society so that socio-economic programs can be implemented by the government to reduce poverty and improve the standards of living of the poor and the disadvantaged sectors,” Alvarez pointed out.
“We will make the wheels of justice truly work under a Duterte presidency, with the perpetrators of crime prosecuted to the full extent of the law,” she stressed.
“Justice for all is what we seek to achieve, with those found guilty of crime and corruption to be meted out prison terms. But the innocent should have nothing to fear as they will have the opportunity to clear their names in the proper judicial venue,” Alvarez concluded.
