MANILA — The Department of Health (DOH) on Friday urged the public to practice frequent hand washing with soap and clean water as a preventive measure against the spread of sore eyes (conjunctivitis) and other viral diseases from one person to another.
According to Dr. Lyndon Lee-Suy, DOH spokesperson, people can prevent getting conjunctivitis if they practice the art of hand washing and keeping their hands away from their eyes.
Lee Suy added that sharing things such as sun glasses, towels, eye make-up and other things should be avoided so that the bacterial infection will not be transferred to the eyes of one another especially when there is someone around infected with sore eyes.
He said that to prevent the spread of the virus it is also good to disinfect with solutions other surfaces which are usually touched by hands such as door knobs, counters, elevators that usually comes in contact with the person infected with sore eyes.
“The key here, is personal hygiene, washing hands frequently can help a lot and of course avoiding sharing of personal things so that virus will not be easily transferred,” Lee-Suy added.
He also said that in case the condition of a person with sore eyes worsens the best advice is to see an eye doctor who can further evaluate and prescribed the best solution as there are other irritable conditions of eyes that can also be detected through check-up.
Sore eyes is usually manifested by redness and inflammation of the membranes (conjunctiva) covering the whites of the eyes and the inner parts of the eyelids.
Among the symptoms that are usually present are redness and itching and presence of a watery pus or discharge from the eyes.
In some conditions, eyelids are stuck together as the person wakes up due to the discharge from the eyes that thickens as the person sleeps.
Severe cases may involve pain of the eyes when exposed to sunlight and foreign-body solutions.
Infection usually lasts from 5 to 12 days.
Those with sore eyes can also have soothing conditions if they take rest so that their immune system can fight the infection and at the same time ensure that their eyes are kept clean and away from other irritating contaminants that can worsen their conditions.
