MANILA – Despite being an ‘untouchable’ Star Hotshots player for years, Marc Pingris acknowledged trade speculations after he joined the Gilas Pilipinas for the 2015 FIBA Asia Championships.
“May ano rin naman, (may naririnig ako)… Hindi natin alam e, ‘di ba? Baka may mga sulsol diyan na sinisiraan ako. Pero hindi ko sinasabi na baka meron ha? Baka lang. Baka naninira lang sa akin,” Pingris said in a Spin.ph report.
(I’ve been hearing [rumors]… We don’t know, right? Maybe there are backstabbers there damaging my reputation. But I’m not saying that maybe there is. Just maybe. Maybe there’s someone defaming me.)
Should the trade-off be true, Pingris had nothing to regret as he believed that Filipinos should serve the Philippines and he was representing the country in the Asia Championships.
“Eh naglalaro lang naman ako para sa bayan natin, hindi naman para kay (Gilas patron) MVP (Manny V. Pangilinan) or sa San Miguel eh… Naglalaro ako para sa bayan natin,” he said.
(I’m just playing for our country, not for MVP or San Miguel… I’m playing for our country.)
Pingris’ agent, Ed Ponceja, also admitted hearing trade speculations and feared that they may be true. But knowing that his ward has talent, Ponceja believed that Pingris will be placed in a good team.
“Nadidinig ko (may ganun nga raw), sometimes (‘yung ganyan kasi totoo)… Normal lang ‘yan. Wala namang choice ang player, kung mate-trade. Wala kang magagawa run, di ba?” he said in the same report.
(I hear rumors, sometimes those are true… That’s normal. The player has no choice if he will be traded. You can’t do anything about it, right)
