MANILA – In a 16-page resolution, the Supreme Court granted a provisional liberty on bail to Senator Juan Ponce Enrile due to his poor health, old age and the need to seek proper medical attention.
“This will not only aid in his adequate preparation of his defense but, more importantly, will guarantee his appearance in court for trial,” the High Court’s decision read.
Enrile earlier petitioned to post bail in the Sandiganbayan but his request was denied.
“The Sandiganbayan… unwarrantedly disregarded the clear showing of the fragile health and advance age of Enrile. As such, the Sandiganbayan gravely abused its discretion in denying Enrile’s Motion to Fix Bail,” the Supreme Court’s decision further read, adding that the elderly senator’s physical condition was a ‘compelling justification for his admission to bail.’
Enrile has been suffering from ‘irregular heartbeat, diffuse atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, chronic hypertension with fluctuating blood pressure levels, and asthma-COPD Overlap Syndrome.’
