MANILA — Six persons died while two persons were injured in a fire that gutted a residential area in Las Pinas City before dawn on New Years eve.

Fire Officer 3 Carl Jeffree Campanan said that the six fatalities were from the Tiamzon Family. The blaze started at 12:42 a.m. Wednesday gutted the residence of the Tiamzons in Ermin Village in Barangay Manuyo Dos.

The fatalities were identified as the charred bodies of Anita Tiamzon, 70; and relative Segunda Fernandez, 80; while Allick Bon, 12; Aaron Acher, 10; Dulce, 50; and Duncan Bryan; all surnamed Tiamzon; died of suffocation when they failed to escape from their burning residence.

Campanan said that two other members of the Tiamzon family — Ace Bon, 22, and Bonifacio, 50 — suffered from burns and lacerations and are now currently being treated at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) in Manila.

Campanan explained that even though the fire was only placed on first alarm and lasted only for more than an hour, the Tiamzon family had difficulty escaping from the fire since the house only had one door and the windows had metal grills.

He added the fire started from the dirty kitchen located outside the house but very adjacent to the door and the fatalities were prompted to hide at the back portion of the house, near the fire wall where they all got trapped.

He also said that when the firefighters arrived at the area, the blaze was already big and they could not anymore get inside the residence.

Arson investigators noted that they are still investigating the cause of fire but said that they are looking into the possibility that it sparked in one of the materials found inside the dirty kitchen.

Campanan estimated the damage at around P300,000 worth of property.
