MANILA — A Catholic priest expressed concern over the possible appointment of acting Department of Health (DOH) Janette Garin to the department, as it will further boost the campaign on contraceptives of the government.
“Her appointment will cement further and deeper the contraceptive and population control policy of this government,” said Father Melvin Castro, executive secretary of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines-Episcopal Commission on Family and Life (CBCP-ECFL).
Asked if he has a suggestion on who to be appointment to head the department, he said, “Its the discretion of the President.”
The Catholic Church official noted that they are not bothered by Garin’s (possible) appointment but much afraid for the Filipino people especially the women.
“We are not afraid of her appointment, we are rather afraid for the Filipino people, especially for the poor women who will be in the receiving end of chemical and artificial contraceptives,” Casto said.
With this, he is hoping that the ”position will not be used to further any political ambition.”
On December 19, President Benigno Aquino III has accepted the resignation of former DOH Secretary Enrique Ona.
